UAB Men's Tennis Defeats Jacksonville State, 4-2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB men's tennis team defeated Jacksonville State, 4-2, Wednesday afternoon at the Brook Highland Racquet Club. With the win the Blazers have now won four of their last five matches and imrpved to 5-2 on the dual match season.
"It was a relief to come away with a victory today," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "Jacksonville State came to play but I thought we could have competed better than we did. This helps us improve our overall record but we have to improve to beat some of our nationally-ranked opponents."
In singles action, Senior Anton Mavrin won at the No. 2 singles position, 7-5, 3-6, 6-1, over Bernardo Bachito and Sebastian Falk dominated the No. 3 spot, 6-0, 6-1. JSU battled getting wins from Scott Robertson at the No. 1 spot and Joey Unkenholz at No. 4.
UAB proved to be too much for the Gamecocks winning at No. 5 and No. 6 to clinch the match. Junior Kruno Despotovski led the way winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3 over Deigo Pazsoldan at No. 6 singles. Sophomore Johannes Spangenberg came from behind at the No. 5 position to defeated Jean Vaccarin, 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
No doubles matches were played as the Blazers win during singles competition.
The Blazers are scheduled to face Tennessee-Martin Friday starting at 1 p.m. at the Brook Highland Racquet Club. Complete coverage of UAB men's tennis can be found at www.uabsports.com.
