BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Fresh off another weekend series win against Mercer, the UAB baseball team will continue on its 12-game homestand, hosting the Birmingham Southern Panthers for a mid-week clash Tuesday at Young Memorial Field. The Blazers come into the contest having won six of their last nine games, and hope to continue their winning ways against a Panther squad that is 3-6 on the young season.
Head coach Larry Giangrosso's squad shook of a loss to Mercer in the opening game of the series last weekend, rebounding to take the final two contests by a total score 13-3. Good starting pitching and timely hitting carried the Blazers, as they got career performances from Lyle Northington on the mound and Danny Sawyer at the plate.
Northington has his best pitching performance as a Blazer on Saturday in game two, pitching 7.2 innings and allowing only two runs. The native of Detroit, Ala., set a career high in innings pitched while picking up his first win on the year. Sawyer had a hot bat all weekend, picking up five hits in 12 at bats and driving in three runs. The junior from Suwanne, Ga., boosted his season average over 40 points during the series, and now sits with a .341 average on the year.
Freshman Kyle Roberson takes the hill tonight for the Blazers, in his second career start at UAB. The Clay, Ala., native threw last week against Samford, going four innings while striking out three. The righthander features a good fastball and a knee-buckling curve, and has all the makings of a solid pitcher. "He has great command of his breaking ball. He knows how to compete on the mound, and will provide depth to the staff," said Giangrosso.
