TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- UAB is in 13th place at the 2006 Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State after the first of three rounds at the par-72, 6,635-yard Eagles Landing Golf Course. Garrett Osborn and Kyle Sapp carded first-round 75s for the Blazers. Both are tied for 41st on the individual leaderboard.
"We didn't shoot well against a good field," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "That doesn't bode well for any team. We have to put this round behind us and come out ready to play on Monday. I'm disappointed, but there's plenty of golf left."
UAB's team score of 303 is six strokes away from the College of Charleston and Vanderbilt, which are tied for 11th. Florida State is eight shots ahead in 10th.
East Tennessee State leads the team race after firing a scorching, six-under-par 282 team score in round one. The Bucs are one stroke ahead of North Carolina and four shots in front of defending Seminole title winner Coastal Carolina. Mississippi State and Northwestern round out the top five. UAB's fellow Conference USA member UCF is tied with Ole Miss for seventh place after a first-round 292 team result.
Freshmen Josh Thompson and Zack Sucher shot 76 and 77, respectively in the first round. Senior Clark Brown fired an opening-round 78 for the Blazers.
The second round of the three-day, 54-hole event will tee off early Monday morning.
