IRVINE, Calif. ----- The UAB men's tennis team swept through singles, losing only one set in six matches, en route to a 7-0 victory here Friday over host UC Irvine on the second day of play at the 27th Annual Anteater Classic.
The Blazers improved to 9-3 on the season with their sixth win in the past seven matches. They will finish play here Saturday with a 9:30 a.m. match against Arkansas-Little Rock.
Senior Anton Mavrin was one of the leaders for UAB against the Anteaters (9-9) as he battled to a 5-7, 7-6, 10-4 win at No. 1 singles over Victor Lamm. Mavrin also was a winner in doubles, teaming with Johannes Spangenberg at the No. 1 position to take an 8-5 win over UC Irvine's duo of Mustafa Ulukan and Trevor Dobson.
Mavrin was the only Blazer extended to three sets against UC Irvine which beat Arkansas-Little Rock, 5-2, Thursday in first day play in the tournament.
"This was a nice win for us," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We played well throughout the lineup. When we got here, we talked about the fact that that `we are here to win tennis matches.' That's our No. 1 priority. The two teams we have played here aren't ranked, but they are both very dangerous teams. I've been pleased with how we have responded."
Senior Sebastian Falk continued his success this spring with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles over UCI's Aaron Ellis. Meanwhile, Kristijan Mitrovski was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over UC Irvine's Ulukan at No. 3 singles while the Blazers' Andre Maier took a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Andrei Radulescu at No. 4.
At the No. 5 position, Spangenberg outlasted Alex Sundling, 6-4, 7-6 with Kruno Despotovski taking a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles over the Anteaters' Trevor Dobson.
The Blazers claimed the doubles point despite a loss at the No. 3 position. UC Irvine's only win on the day came at No. 3 doubles as Lamm and Sundling teamed to beat UAB's Mitrovski and Despotovski by a 9-7 score. UAB won at No. 1 doubles with Mavrin and Spangenberg prevailing, and also took a 9-7 win at No. 2 with Falk and Maier defeating Ellis and Radulescu.
