UAB Tennis Team Downs Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB men's tennis team continued its impressive play, winning for the seventh time in the past eight matches, as the Blazers cruised past visiting Southeastern Louisiana, 6-1, Wednesday at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
The Blazers, who improved to 10-3 on the season, won the doubles point and then claimed wins in five of six singles matches in handing the No. 71-ranked Lions only their third loss of the season. SLU dropped to 14-3 with the defeat.
"I thought we got a great effort today by all of our players," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr. "We just came back from a spring break trip to California where we played late last week, so I was a little concerned coming into today, that we might not be as focused as we should be. But they all showed up ready to play tennis. It was a total team effort."
UAB's Anton Mavrin didn't need much time at No. 1 singles to dispose of SLU's Haris Huremovic, 6-1, 6-0. Mavrin also teamed with Johannes Spangenberg at No. 1 doubles to defeat the Lions' duo of Huremovic and Ondrej Krivka, 8-5.
Meanwhile, Sebastian Falk improved his record to 12-1 in dual matches with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 2 singles over SLU's Ilie Babinciuc. Kristijan Mitrovski won at No. 3 singles for the Blazers, taking a 7-5, 6-4 victory over the Lions' Matthieu Leboucher. At No. 4 singles, the Blazers' Andre Maier took the decision in a close match as SLU's Ondrej Krivka retired at 2-2 in the third set after winning the first set (6-4) but falling in the second by the same score.
UAB's other singles win came at No. 6 as Kruno Despotovski won by a 6-4, 6-4 over Julien Lausao. The Lions' only victory in the match came at No. 5 singles as Vladimir Paunic outlasted the Blazers' Johannes Spangenberg, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3.
In doubles, aside from the No. 1 win by Mavrin and Spangenberg, UAB's tandem of Falk and Maier were 8-2 winners over Leboucher and Lausao. SLU's No. 3 team of Babincuic and Paunic claimed an 8-6 victory over the Blazers' Despotovski and Mitrovski.
