SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ----- The UAB men's tennis team won for the fifth time in its last six matches, posting wins in five of six singles matches to defeat Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 5-2.
The Blazers lost the doubles point as only the No. 2 tandem of Sebastian Falk and Andre Maier were winners, taking an 8-6 victory over Cal Poly's Fred Dewitte and Matt Baca.
Anton Mavrin and Kristijan Mitrovski dropped an 8-5 decision at No. 1 doubles to John Nguyen and Brett Van Linge with UAB's Johannes Spangenberg and Thomas Weiss falling at No. 3 to the Cal Poly duo of Kyle Roybal and Darryn Young, 8-6.
But it didn't take long for UAB to take control of the match as the Blazers captured straight-set wins at No. 2, 5 and 6 singles. Falk downed Baca at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-1; UAB's Spangenberg defeated Roybal, 6-1, 6-4; and Kruno Despotovski was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over the Mustangs' Young.
Three-set wins by the Blazers' Mitrovski at No. 3 over Van Linge and at No. 4 by Maier over Dewitte also proved to be huge for UAB, which improved to 8-3 in dual matches on the season.
Earning the lone singles win for Cal Poly (7-8) was John Nguyen, who defeated UAB's Anton Mavrin, 6-2, 6-2.
The Blazers continue their California trek Friday when they play at California-Irvine.
