PINEHURST, N.C. ----- The UAB men's golf team moved up a spot in the standings to second place here Monday after two rounds at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana University.
By carding a team score of 298 for the second straight day, the Blazers, with a two-day score of 596, moved ahead of Indiana by a shot and now trails fellow Conference USA member SMU by only four shots heading into Tuesday's final round at the par 72, 7,035-yard Pinehurst No. 8.
The Mustangs followed up their opening day 291 with a 301 in Monday's second round. Indiana is third in the team standings at 597, followed by Charlotte at 598 and UNC Greensboro at 599. Rounding out the top 10 are Xavier (602), followed by Southern Miss (604), Ball State (604), Wisconsin (605) and UNC Wilmington (605).
UAB freshman Josh Thompson turned in his second solid performance by carding a 75 on Monday and is tied for sixth place individually heading into final round action. SMU's Colt Knost is the leader after two rounds at one-under par 143, a stroke ahead of UNC Wilmington's Will Shambley and two better than fellow Mustang Brandon DeStefano.
The Blazers also got a solid round from senior Clark Brown who fired a two-over 74 and improved eight spots to 13th after two rounds. Sophomore Kyle Sapp also carded a 74 Monday and is tied for 20th while junior Garrett Osborn, after shooting an 80 Sunday in the first round, bounced back with a 75 Monday. Osborn is tied for 53rd at 155.
UAB's other player in the tournament, freshman Zack Sucher, is at 158 through two rounds after carding an 83 on Monday, eight shots higher than his opening day performance.
"We had another solid day of play," said UAB head coach Alan Kaufman. "Josh had another good day and it was good to see Garrett come back with a good round of golf after Sunday. There are some very good teams here, but overall, I think we are in a good position to make a run on Tuesday."
