PINEHURST, N.C. -- Freshman Josh Thompson shot an even par 72 Sunday to lead UAB to a tie for third place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate hosted by Indiana University. The Blazers are knotted with UNC Greensboro with a first-round 298 team score.
"We're in good position heading into round two," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Surprisingly enough, Garrett Osborn's score was the one we dropped today, which is unusual. That makes me think we'll continue to get better from a team standpoint as he comes around."
Thompson's 72 is tied for fourth on the individual leader board and two strokes off the lead. UNCG's Nathan Stanley fired a two-under 70 to take the early edge in the individual standings.
Fellow UAB freshman Zack Sucher is tied for 21st with a three-over 75 after 18 holes, as is senior Clark Brown. Sophomore Kyle Sapp is a stroke behind that duo at 76. Osborn carded a first-round 80.
The Blazers are seven shots off the team lead, held by fellow C-USA member SMU. Host Indiana is in second place. After UAB and UNC Greensboro, the remainder of the top 10 includes fifth place Xavier and Penn State (301), seventh place Charlotte (302), eighth place Marquette (304) and a trio tied for ninth at 305 in Wisconsin, Ball State and UNC Wilmington.
The tournament continues with the second of three rounds on Monday with the third and final 18 holes Tuesday at the par 72, 7,035-yard Pinehurst No. 8.
