"The course is playing very tough," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "We haven't responded as well as we should have. We'll see if we can't refocus a bit for Tuesday's round and see what we can do to get back in this thing."
Brown is tied for 15th with three other golfers with a round to play. Garrett Osborn followed a two-over 75 first round with an 80 on Monday. Zack Sucher improved from an 83 to a 79, Matt King trimmed two strokes off his first round 83 and Kaylor Timmons dropped 13 strokes from the first to second rounds and has carded 89-76 for the tournament thus far.
UAB's team score fell from 318 on Sunday to 308 Monday, but only last place Mercer shot higher than the Blazers in Monday's second round. UAB is seven team strokes behind Coastal Carolina and 14th place. The Blazers are within 12 shots of the top-10 and 26 strokes from a top-five finish. The Blazers have recorded four straight tournaments of top-3 or better finishes.
UCLA held on to first place on the team leaderboard with a 304 on Monday. The Bruins stand at 594 for the two rounds and are two strokes in front of Texas Tech (596).
The Mercedes Benz Collegiate field is one of UAB's toughest challenges yet. All but three teams are ranked in the Golfweek/Sagarin's top-50. UAB is ranked No. 42.
