ORLANDO, Fla. ----- The UAB men's tennis team dropped the doubles point with three narrow losses and never got untracked in falling to UCF, 5-2, Saturday at the Conference USA Shootout.
The Blazers (3-2) posted their only victories in the match at the No. 2 and No. 3 singles positions. UAB's Anton Mavrin was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Alamgir Wali at the No. 2 spot while fellow senior Sebastian Falk took a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Golden Knights' Sebastian Delgado at the No. 3 slot in the lineup.
UCF was a straight set winner at each of the other four singles positions, including a 6-2, 7-6 decision at the No. 1 spot by Sinan Sudas over the Blazers' Kristijan Mitrovski.
The Golden Knights also picked up a win at No. 4 as Norman Alcantara defeated UAB's Andre Maier, 6-4, 7-5. However, it was at the No. 5 and 6 spots that UAB head coach Derek Tarr felt his squad struggled. The Blazers' Johannes Spangenberg dropped a 6-0, 6-3 match to UCF's Brock Sakey while UAB junior college transfer Kruno Despotovski fell, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 6 to Jimmy Roesch.
In doubles, the Blazers had a shot in all three matches but came up short in each. UAB's Falk and Maier, ranked No. 40 nationally, dropped a 9-7 decision at the No. 2 position to UCF's Delgado and Wali. At No. 1, Mavrin and Mitrovski fell to the Golden Knights' Alcantara and Sudas, 8-6. UCF closed out doubles play with an 8-5 win at No. 3 by Sakey and Tarek Ben Soltane over UAB's Spangenberg and Thomas Weiss.
"Overall, I was disappointed with our performance today," said Tarr, whose team had opened the tournament Friday in impressive fashion with a 6-1 win over Southern Miss. "I don't know what it was, if playing such an early (9 a.m.) match had an effect, or what. I really thought we'd be ready to go today. UCF has a good team, but I thought we would compete better, especially at the lower part of our lineup. We only took four games at the 5 and 6 positions and we have to do better than that."
UAB will finish its play here in the C-USA Shootout Sunday when it takes on East Carolina.
