GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Junior Garrett Osborn shot a one-under 69 on the third and final day of the Gator Invitational hosted by the University of Florida to lead UAB's contingent. Osborn vaulted from a tie for 21st after 36-holes to a tie for sixth on the overall leaderboard.
"Sunday's round was what we knew Garrett could do," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He made a nice run for it and we got some solid play from Kyle to make a run at things."
UAB finished seventh out of 14 teams in the event with a 54-hole total of 888 on the par-70, 6,701-yard University Club Golf Course. The Blazers were two strokes better than South Carolina and new Conference USA rival UCF. UAB also bettered Purdue, North Florida, Georgia Southern, Ohio State and Kentucky.
Host Florida took the team title and Tulsa's Sam Korbe beat out the Gators' Brett Segmaier on the second playoff hole to take individual medalist honors.
Osborn recorded rounds of 72-74-69 for a 54-hole total of 215 for the event, which was five-over par. Sophomore Kyle Sapp, playing in his first tournament for the Blazers this season, shot 71-74-73 for an eight-over total of 218 and a tie for 16th place individually.
Senior Clark Brown (78-74-77=229), freshman Josh Thompson (71-80-80=231) and sophomore Kaylor Timmons (83-76-79=238) rounded out UAB's efforts for the tournament.
"We still have to get better if we want to make a run at a Conference USA championship and an NCAA Regional," Kaufman said. "It's going to take more than one or two guys playing well. We need improvement from our numbers two through five guys or we'll be on the outside looking in again."
The Blazers have a weekend off before competing in a similar tournament. Sunday through Tuesday, March 5-7, Kaufman's club will return to the Sunshine state to compete in Florida State's Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee.
