GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- In his first start of the 2005-06 season, sophomore Kyle Sapp shot rounds of 71-74 on Saturday to pace UAB's men's golf team in the 2006 Gator Invitational hosted by Florida. Sapp's two-round total of 145 has the Gardendale, Ala., product tied for 17th on the individual leaderboard. Garrett Osborn (72-74) is a shot behind Sapp and tied for 21st.
"I'm proud of Kyle and his play today," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He certainly has the potential to be that kind of contributor for us. I'm glad he stepped up."
Sapp's first-round 71 bettered his UAB career-best round by a stroke.
UAB is sixth out of 14 teams with the final round to play on Sunday at the par-70, 6,701-yard Florida University Club Course. The Blazers' team total of 590 with rounds of 292 and 298 put UAB 28 shots behind team leader and host Florida. Tulsa (573), Florida State (577), Georgia State (578) and LSU (588) stand between the Blazers and the Gators in the top five.
"We're in pretty fair shape," Kaufman said. "As with any effort, we want to get better the next time out. If we do that and get a break here or there, we can climb a notch or two. We'll see."
Freshman Josh Thompson returned to the UAB lineup and fired rounds of 71-80. He is tied for 39th overall at 151. Senior Clark Brown (78-74=152) is a shot back. Kaylor Timmons (83-76=159) is also competing for the Blazers.
Florida's Brett Stegmaier's nine-under 134 with rounds of 65-69 leads the way individually. Tulsa's Nicolas Geyger is five strokes back in second place.
