BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's soccer team has added an additional honor to the many that it has already racked up this postseason. Junior forward Sally Palmer has earned a spot on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's All-Southeast Region third team for her outstanding performance during the 2006 season. Palmer was a vital part of UAB's Conference USA tournament championship and trip to the NCAA Women's College Cup.
"This is quite a prestigious award," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "The players are selected by the coaches of the teams they competed against throughout the year. I'm very excited to see that the coaches have selected Sally as one of the best players in what may be the most competitive region in the country."
The Southeast Region has proven to be one of the top regions in women's college soccer, with two teams from that region, North Carolina and Florida State, preparing to make an appearance in the Final Four of the 2006 NCAA Women's College Cup on December 1.
During her junior season, Palmer led the team and ranked among Conference USA's best in various categories. For the year she tallied nine goals, including four-game winning scores, along with a pair of assists to rack up a team-high 20 points. Palmer's efforts also earned her a place on the All-Conference USA second-team at year's end.
"In addition to being a proven goal-scorer, Sally has a creative flair to her play that makes her tremendously effective and fun to watch," said Harbin. "She has worked hard for three years to better herself as a player and is a great representative of UAB soccer and Conference USA, both on and off the field. I am extremely proud of her and her accomplishments"
This is not the first time that UAB has placed a player on the prestigious team, as the Blazers have racked up 11 previous all-region nods from the NSCAA. Prior recipients of the honor include Jill Porto (2005), Nasra Abdullah (2005), Jenny Rynders (2004), Briana McCarty (2003-04), Tara Kidwell (2002-04) and Vanessa Woodward (1997-99).
Palmer is joined by a pair of UCF players, Roberta Pelarigo and Jennifer Manis, as the only Conference USA representatives on the squad.
