DALLAS, Texas - The UAB women's soccer team reserved its spot in the Conference USA Tournament finals by knocking off third-seeded Memphis by way of penalty kicks on Friday evening. The two squads played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer and eventually decided the contest by penalty kicks, with UAB outdoing Memphis, 4-3. The Blazers will now face Colorado College in the championship match on Sunday, November 5 at 3 p.m.
UAB sent four different players out for penalty kicks, with junior Sally Palmer, sophomores Nadine Liverpool and Caitlin Marple, and freshman Rachael Axon all converting on their attempts.
Memphis' Maiko Higashiyama made the first attempt for the Tigers, while Shoko Mikami missed on the second go-around for Memphis. Geneil Newbern and Jocelyn Whitehead both converted for the Tigers, but when Memphis freshman Roma Rozanska missed on the next try, the Blazers did not have to make their last attempt and earned their ticket to the final round.
UAB senior goalkeeper Katie Forbis nabbed seven saves on her way to earning the shutout. Goalie Isabel Briones grabbed four saves for Memphis during the contest.
The Blazers will face-off against fifth-seeded Colorado College, who knocked off the number one seed SMU, 4-1, in the other semi-final game on Friday. Sunday's championship game will be broadcasted live on CSTV on Sunday at 3 p.m.
