BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB head baseball coach Brian Shoop announced the complete 2007 Blazer baseball schedule on Tuesday. The Blazers are scheduled to play five teams that ended 2006 in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll, with opening day being penciled in for Friday, Feb. 16 when Central Michigan comes to Young Memorial Field for a three-game series.
"We are very excited to release our 2007 baseball schedule and know it will be a tremendous challenge and experience for our kids as well as fun to follow for everyone who cares about UAB baseball," Shoop said. "We are committed to playing a challenging and exciting schedule every year and this year's schedule proves that commitment."
UAB will play a Pac-10 school for the first time in program history when it travels to play a three-game set at Arizona State, Feb. 23-25, and will host a Big Ten opponent, Purdue, March 3 & 4.
The UCF Golden Knights will serve as the team's first Conference USA opponent March 30-April 1. A pair of SEC schools in Alabama and Mississippi State will take on the Blazers this season, while a late-season series with Rice is sure to be a big draw, as the Owls come to play in the friendly confines of Young Memorial Field.
"We believe one of the most exciting things we offer recruits is a tremendous schedule and the opportunity to play in some of the best venues in college baseball," Shoop said. "We play in some great baseball environments, in some fabulous cities and against some of college baseball's best. Our home schedule will allow Birmingham baseball fans to see us play some of the best college baseball teams in America."
The Blazers' opening day game with Central Michigan will get underway at 3:00 p.m. at Young Memorial Field.
