BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Bradley Hicks of Faith Academy in Mobile, Ala. has signed a National Letter if Intent (NLI) to play baseball for the UAB Blazers next year, according to an announcement by UAB head coach Brian Shoop on Tuesday.
"When we saw Bradley play, his hustle and attitude were two things that really stuck out," Shoop said. "As we watched him more, we saw a special skill set that will match our style of play at UAB. He will be able to bunt, handle the bat and defend in our big outfield, all things that go a long way to winning games."
Hicks will letter for the fourth time this spring under head coach Lloyd Skoda at Faith Academy where he hit .385 with three doubles and two triples as a junior. He was a perfect 16-for-16 on steal attempts and scored 45 runs, while batting in 27. He was also strong defensively, boasting a fielding percentage of .975.
"Having played for Hall of Fame Coach Loyd Skota at Faith Academy, Bradley has learned what it takes to win and will bring a work ethic and winning attitude that will be keys to competing in Conference USA," Shoop said.
In addition to being a great baseball player, Hicks has also established himself as a great student. He is a member of the National Honor Society and Beta Club and has been Class Chaplain all four years of his high school career, in addition to being active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
"Bradley is another outstanding student, carrying a 3.9 GPA in high school," Shoop said. "He plans to attend medical school after graduation, so UAB was the perfect school for him as well. Bradley is a special young man that our entire campus will enjoy. He is another high character person that every coach loves to build their team around. We are thrilled to add Bradley Hicks to our Blazer Baseball Family."
Hicks is the son of Steve and Patti Hicks and has a brother (Michael) and a sister (Meredith).
The Blazers will conclude announcing their signees on Wednesday.
