UAB Falls to Tennessee in NCAA Tournament, 4-0

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The UAB women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Friday evening as it dropped its NCAA opening round match to Tennessee, 4-0, at Regal Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Vols used three second half goals to secure their win over the Blazers and advance to the second round of the 2006 NCAA Women's College Cup.
The match remained scoreless throughout much of the first half, despite a combined 17 shots. Tennessee took 12 shots, including five shots on goal, while UAB tallied five shots, four of which were on goal.
Both teams had multiple chances to score, including a stellar shot by junior Jill Porto around the 15th minute that Lady Vols' goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson laid out horizontal to save. The Blazers also had a dangerous offensive possession during the 20th minute that recorded shots on goal by junior Sally Palmer and freshman Rachael Axon.
Tennessee got on the board with 57 seconds remaining in the first half of play when Jordan Falcusan scored from about 27 yards out with an assist by Mick Imgram to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Lady Vols at halftime.
Less than 10 minutes into the second half, Tennessee widened its lead to 2-0 when Imgram nabbed her seventh goal of the year on a free kick. The Lady Vols added a third score in the 68th minute of the contest when Kylee Rossi knocked in her 10th goal of the season with an assist from Emily Redberg.
Tennessee added additional security with less than 20 minutes remaining in the match when Kristen Doukakis tallied her fourth score of the season as she knocked in a goal off of a rebound from Imgram's previous shot.
For the match, Tennessee out-shot the Blazers by a count of 20-8. UAB senior goalkeeper Katie Forbis tallied five saves and allowed four goals in the loss. UT's goalie Johnson had three saves to complete the shutout for the Lady Vols.
Porto led the Blazers in shots with three, including two shots on goal. Palmer tallied a pair of shots while Axon, senior Jennifer Williams and sophomore Nadine Liverpool had one shot each.
Tennessee will face Duke in the regional finals on Sunday, November 12 after the Blue Devils outlasted Louisville in penalty kicks earlier Friday evening.
