BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women's basketball team has been busy as of late, not just with classes, workouts and preparing for the upcoming season, but also volunteering within the Birmingham community. The Blazers, who do multiple community service projects throughout the year, have been involved in two recent events during the past few weeks.
On Saturday, September 30, the entire squad, along with members of the staff, volunteered their assistance and time at the Mercedes Kids Marathon. The event was held at the Samford University football stadium and benefited the Children's Hospital of Alabama.
The Kids Marathon was established to encourage children (K-6th grade) to have fun, build endurance and increase self-esteem, while also emphasizing the importance of making health and physical fitness a regular part of their lives. It is a kick-off event for the Mercedes Marathon, which is held February 10.
On Tuesday, October 3, the players and staff hosted a basketball clinic for a local girls scout troop. During the evening session, the Blazers demonstrated and assisted the children with basic basketball fundamentals and drills.
