TULSA, Okla. --- Crystal McFadden hit a jumper with 18 seconds left to lead the UAB women's basketball to a 60-57 win over Tulsa Friday night. The victory was the Blazers' first in Conference USA action and their first road win of the season. UAB's win snapped Tulsa's school-record 10-game home win streak.
Freshman Britney Jones led UAB with a career-best 22 points in the contest. Jones was 9-of-16 from the field, including 3-of-7 from beyond the arc. Additionally, McFadden contributed 10 points, eight of them in the second half, and a team-best three assists.
I'm extremely proud of our team tonight," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "We came in and fought throughout the game. Tulsa came back to take the lead in the second half, but our team regrouped and battled back for the win. Britney was great tonight and showed no fear in a tough game. This was definitely a team effort."
UAB (8-6, 1-2) had a 23-22 lead at the intermission, but Tulsa rallied to start the second half, going on a 14-4 run in the opening minutes. The Blazers then began to chip away and finally regained the lead for good on a Carmen Guzman layup with 1:59 left in the contest.
After a Tulsa (11-4, 2-2) miss, Guzman hit a jumper with 1:06 remaining for a 58-55 lead. Jillian Robbins brought the Golden Hurricane back into within one with 46 second left, but McFadden's layup and a stand by the UAB defense sealed the win.
Robbins led the Golden Hurricane with 22 points and 13 rebounds in the game. The double-double was the 12th of the season for Robbins who currently leads the nation in rebounding.
UAB heads to Dallas, Texas to face SMU Sunday at 2 p.m.
