Sept. 26, 2005
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
Beck Troutman and Chris Wells of LSU both shot three-under par 69s in Monday's first round of the UAB-hosted 2005 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate and the Bayou Bengals have a one-stroke lead over Tennessee in the team standings through 18 holes. The 15-team field made it approximately 16 holes through round two before darkness halted play Monday evening. The remainder of the second round and the final 18 of the 54-hole tournament will be played on Tuesday.
"The overnight showers got us just enough behind this morning," UAB head Coach Alan Kaufman said. "The good news is that after the morning clouds rolled out, it was a beautiful day for golf and we expect the same on Tuesday. These are some of the best college golf teams in the country and this tournament has lived up to the hype. There's some great competition going on out there."
Troutman and Wells are joined atop the individual leaderboard by Cole Isban of Notre Dame and East Tennessee State's Garreth Shaw. The foursome is a stroke ahead of Jonathan Mount and Chris Paisley of Tennessee, who both carded 70s in the first round.
Joseph Sykora and Matthew Swan of Alabama both shot one-under in the first round and are tied with three others for seventh place. UAB's Garrett Osborn headlines a group of 10 individuals at even par 72 and tied for 12th in the 75-person field.
LSU's team score of 284 is one better than Tennessee's 285. Georgia State's even-par 288 team score stands third while Alabama and Florida are tied for fourth with first round 290s. Notre Dame (291) and East Tennessee State (294) stand sixth and seventh, respectively. Host UAB is tied for eighth place with Florida State after a 295 team score. Places 10-15 are, in order: SMU, N.C. State, North Florida, UCF, Toledo and Birmingham-Southern.
"We're in good shape," Kaufman said of UAB's standing. "Eight of these teams were ranked in the top 50 last year and we were 69th. To be up there with them shows were making strides. There's a lot of golf to be played, however, and we've got to finish strong to be among the leaders at the end."
The teams started 45 minutes later than the originally scheduled 8:15 a.m. Monday tee times due to overnight and morning showers in the Birmingham area. The public is invited to watch the remainder of round two and the final round of play Tuesday at Shoal Creek. Admission is free.
This is the first annual Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by UAB.
