BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team won its second match of the day with a 3-1 victory over Lipscomb on Friday evening at Bartow Arena. With their two victories on Friday, the Blazers have doubled their win total from the 2004 season. UAB is now 2-0 while the Lady Bisons fall to 0-3. Freshman Ivana Bozic recorded her second double-double of the day, leading the Blazers with 15 kills and 16 digs in the evening session.
UAB also got an outstanding performance from freshman Casey Dent who notched 13 kills and hit .632 while contributing six total blocks. Senior Isabel Oquendo and sophomore Shaniquwa Cooper each put away 9 kills in the match. Lipscomb was led offensively by Jessica Enderle who had a match-best 16 kills.
"Casey Dent really showed she can compete at a high level tonight," said co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "And all day long, Ivana Bozic proved the same thing. Today was a good start for us and will hopefully be a sign of things to come. Now we'll break down this morning's game against Stetson and try to fix the mistakes we made in the first match."
After a 30-25 victory in game one, the Blazers dominated game two, cruising to a 30-17 win behind a combined ten kills from Bozic, Oquendo and Dent. UAB came up with service aces from three different players in three of the game's first ten points and never looked back.
But Lipscomb fought back and scratched out a 32-30 win as they faced defeat in game three. UAB fought off a game point at 28-29, then had an opportunity to put the match away at 30-29, but the Lady Bisons scored the game's final three points to stay alive.
The Blazers would rally from an early deficit to put away the match with a 30-24 win in game four. Three of Dent's five block assists came in this game, and Oquendo finished off Lipscomb with a kill set up by Nevena Stefanov on game point.
UAB returns to action again on Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. as the Blazers face the Stetson Hatters for the second time in as many days.
