BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Jerson Monteiro and Maurice Hughes each scored for No. 23 UAB as the Blazers shutout visiting Evansville, 2-0, in Sunday's final match of the 2005 UAB Classic. UNC Greensboro (4-2) took the tournament title with a 3-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern in Sunday's other Classic contest.
UNCG's Randy Patterson was named the tournament's MVP after a goal and an assist in the win over Birmingham-Southern. The Spartans (4-2) downed host UAB on Friday and finished the tournament 2-0. Patterson had a goal in the UAB win as well.
In the 2-0 UAB win over Evansville, Monteiro's 21st-minute tally came from a Carlo Schiavoni pass flicked on by Derick Radcliffe. Hughes' goal, which came in the 86th minute, was unassisted as he streamed across the top of the 18-yard box, eluded a pair of Purple Ace defenders, and drove a shot past Evansville goalkeeper Matt Vessells.
"I thought the guys worked pretty hard for it being 142-degrees out here," UAB head coach Mike Getman joked, referring to the 90-degree heat with beating sun all afternoon. "It was hot and it's hard to play back-to-back (Friday, then Sunday). I thought the effort was there. I thought all weekend our weakness was that we couldn't finish anything. Today, we created about 10 good chances to score goals. We came away with a win, but we were fortunate because we missed most of the chances we got."
UAB net-minder A.J. Robles notched four saves in his ninth career shutout. The Tucson, Ariz., product withstood 15 Evansville shots. The Blazers (5-1) countered with 14 shots of their own. Defender Dejan Jakovic and midfielder Jason McLaughlin, who tallied an assist in the Friday match, were UAB's representatives selected to the All-Tournament squad.
UNC Greensboro 3, Birmingham-Southern 1
Randy Patterson's goal and assist anchored UNC Greensboro's 3-0 victory over Birmingham-Southern (3-3) in what became the Classic's title match after both squads won Friday night. Yokul Elisabetarson and David Grayson also scored and Jay Benfield notched four saves in the shutout win for the Spartans. Elizabetarson, Jamie Carlson and David Worthen joined Patterson on the all-tournament squad.
UNCG out-shot Birmingham-Southern, 19-9, but had to withstand several late chances from the Panthers. Thimo Langner, Gino Cozzolino and goalkeeper Joe Nasco, who had six saves against the Spartans, were all named to the all-tournament team.
No. 23 UAB finishes off early season tournament play Friday and Sunday, Sept. 23 and 25, when they face Stanford and No. 10 California, respectively, in the Stanford Nike Classic in Palo Alto, Calif.
