WAYZATA, Minn. - Senior Clark Brown and junior Garrett Osborn shot three-over par 75s on Sunday to lead UAB's men's golf contingent at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational at the par-72, 7,020-yard Spring Hill Golf Club outside Minneapolis. Brown wound up the highest Blazer finisher for the 54-hole event, shooting rounds of 75-82-75 to tie for 38th overall. UAB finished 12th in the team standings.
"We certainly didn't jump out of the gates the way we would have liked," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "But we got the season started and we know what we have to do to get better now. Two of our freshman got some key tournament experience, so we'll learn from this weekend and try to get better at home next week."
Freshmen Zack Sucher and Josh Thompson made their college debuts in the event. Thompson improved two strokes from rounds two to three and finished with a 78 on Sunday. Sucher opened with a four-over 76 in his first college round on Saturday. Sophomore Kaylor Timmons fired rounds of 79-80-84 for the Blazers as well.
UAB will return home next weekend for the first Shoal Creek Intercollegiate hosted by the Blazers. The tournament will have a practice round Sunday, Sept. 25 with a shotgun start for the first round at 8:15 a.m. Monday. The second round will tee off Monday afternoon with the third and final round of play beginning at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. The tournament is the first men's collegiate golf tournament to be played at Shoal Creek in nine years. Eight of the 15 teams scheduled to appear in the tournament finished the 2004-05 season ranked in Golfweek Magazine's top 50.
