RICHMOND, Ky. - The UAB volleyball team saw its eight-match winning streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon in McBrayer Arena in the second match of the Nike Invitational. The Blazers struggled to find a rhythm all match long and fall to 8-1 on the season while the Colonels improve to 6-3.
Eastern Kentucky's Liz Guard led all players with 15 kills in the contest, and put together a match-high .609 hitting percentage. Overall as a team, the Colonels hit .387 in the match compared to just .054 for UAB, its lowest mark of the season. Ivana Bozic paced the Blazers offensively with nine kills.
The Colonels wasted no time grabbing a 1-0 lead with a dominant, 30-15 victory in game one and followed that up with a 30-18 win in the second game. The Blazers were unable to get anything going in the third game either, falling 30-17 and putting an end to their season-opening, eight-match winning streak. Eastern Kentucky went 27-5 in 2004, and made the third NCAA Tournament appearance in school history.
A campus-wide power outage on Friday postponed UAB's match versus UNC Greensboro. The undefeated Blazers were scheduled to take on the Spartans in the first match of the Nike Invitational at 5 p.m. ET, but will now face UNC Greensboro on Saturday at 4 p.m. ET.
