WAYZATA, Minn. - The UAB men's golf team stands in 12th place at the Minnesota Gopher Invitational after the first two rounds of the team's 2005-06 season. The Blazers carded a 303 after the first round of the tournament at the par-72, 7,202-yard Spring Hill Golf Course outside of Minneapolis.
Freshman Zach Sucher fired rounds of 76-80 to lead the way for the Blazers. His total of 156 after two rounds has him in 40th place in the individual standings. Clark Brown (75-82=157, T-46th) and Kaylor Timmons (79-80=159, T-50th) also finished for the Blazers.
Junior Garrett Osborn shot a one-over par 73 in round one, but failed to sign his scorecard and was disqualified in round two. Freshman Josh Thompson befell a similar fate after an 83 in his opening collegiate round.
Host Minnesota has the tournament lead as Niall Turner and Antti Ahokas each shot one-under-par 143s for the first two rounds and lead all individuals. Washington and Purdue are tied for second in the team standings. Georgia State is fourth while Memphis and Stanford are tied for fifth place.
The Blazers will take to the course for the third and final round of 18 on Sunday. Alan Kaufman's club returns to Birmingham next weekend when it hosts the 2005 Shoal Creek Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 26 and 27. The tournament features 15 teams, eight of which were ranked in Golfweek Magazine's top 50 to end last season.
