BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second straight match, three members of the UAB volleyball team recorded double-doubles as the Blazers handed Tennessee State a 3-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon in Bartow Arena. The Blazers are now 3-0 in the UAB Tutwiler Invitational and 7-0 overall on the season while the Lady Tigers fall to 3-7 overall.
"This was our best match so far this season," said co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "We really pulled together in the fourth game and played like a team."
The Blazers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first game where they were led by Aleksandra Vujovic's seven kills on eight attempts. UAB hit .433 as a team in the game, compared to just .080 by Tennessee State
UAB battled back from an early deficit in game two, going on a 6-0 run to take a 13-11 lead when the Lady Tigers called their first timeout. The teams would trade points back and forth for the remainder of the game, but with UAB leading 29-28, a Tennessee State blocking error gave the Blazers a 2-0 lead in the match.
After Tennessee State stayed alive with a 30-20 win in game three, the Blazers rebounded to capture the victory in game four. Despite being down by as many as seven points at 19-12, UAB fought back to score 12 of the next 15 points and take a 24-22 lead. The Blazers finished out the match, winning 11 of the final 14 points and sealed the deal with an Ivana Bozic kill on game point.
Bozic (16 kills, 11 digs), Vujovic (15 kills, 13 digs), and Isabel Oquendo (16 kills, 11 digs) each notched double-doubles and Nevena Stefanov led all players with 54 assists. Casey Dent (9 kills, 3 block assists) and Amy White (15 digs) also contributed for the Blazers. Kara Keifer and Kelly Davis combined for 35 kills for Tennessee State.
Two matches remain in the UAB Tuwiler Invitational. Tennessee State and Louisiana-Monroe will face off at 4:30 p.m. while the UAB-Southeastern Louisiana match at 7 p.m. concludes the tournament.
