Blazers Fall To East Carolina, 18-5

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- East Carolina pounded out 22 hits, including ten doubles and four home runs and handed UAB its most lopsided defeat of the season, 18-5, on Friday evening at Young Memorial Field. East Carolina is now 30-20 overall, 14-11 in Conference USA while the Blazers fall to 30-21, 13-12 in league play.
The PIrates scored in every inning except the second and the 18 runs were the most allowed by UAB this season. Eleven different East Carolina batters contributed at least one hit in the game.
T.J. Hose improves to 7-3 after working seven innings and allowing just two runs on four hits in the victory for East Carolina. UAB's Cole Helms is now 3-3 after allowing seven hits and seven earned runs in just two innings.
The Pirates and Blazers traded a pair of runs with first inning homers. Brian Cavanaugh led off the game with a home run to right-center field for East Carolina and Zac Ward answered for UAB with his fifth round-tripper of the season, a deep drive over the scoreboard in left field.
After the Blazers took the lead on a Rush Knight RBI groundout, the PIrates came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Cavanaugh led the inning off with a double and Dale Mollenhauer followed with a two-run home run over the left field wall, his third of the season. After Adam Witter and Ryan Peizel reached base, Drew Costanzo then launched his team-leading ninth home run of the season over the right field wall to give East Carolina a 6-2 lead. The PIrates would add two more runs before the inning came to an end.
The Pirates would add ten runs over the final six innings while the Blazers got one in the eighth and two more in the ninth, including Brett Hall's first RBI of his career to finish out the scoring.
Game two between the Blazers and Pirates will begin on Saturday at 2 p.m.
