BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball team heads to Georgia State on Wednesday for a 6 pm, non-conference matchup with the Panthers. The Blazers are 18-10 overall on the season with a 4-5 mark in Conference USA games. Georgia State is 17-13, 10-5 in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Freshman righthander Heath Tapscott (2-0) will take the mound for UAB, looking for his third consecutive victory.
The Blazers defeated Samford, 14-4, last Wednesday evening at Young Memorial Field before suffering a three-game sweep at the hands of third-ranked Tulane last weekend in New Orleans. The Green Wave took an 11-3 victory in Friday's series opener, edged the Blazers 4-3 on Saturday and finished the weekend with a convincing 13-5 win.
The Panthers took two of three games from Lipscomb last weekend in a conference series in Nashville, Tenn. Georgia State is led by Justin Newman who leads the team in batting average (.384), runs (25), hits (38), doubles (10), and home runs (8).
The Blazers are 8-2 all-time against Georgia State, but the teams have not met on the diamond since April 10, 1982 when each squad won one game of a doubleheader in Atlanta.
