STARKVILLE, Miss. - The UAB softball team fell to Mississippi State, 11-1 in five innings, on Tuesday evening at the MSU Softball Field as the Blazers wrapped up their season series against the Bulldogs.
UAB (19-29) dropped an 8-3 decision to the Bulldogs last month in Birmingham and were schedule to play Tuesday's game on March 22, but a rainout forced the game to be rescheduled. The Bulldogs (26-21) have now won four-straight games versus UAB.
Mississippi State starting pitcher Stephanie Comeaux (9-6) picked up her second victory of the season against the Blazers as she went the distance and allowed just one run and five hits while walking none and striking out four. Brittany Hodge took the loss for UAB to fall to 2-11 this season as she allowed seven runs on eight hits in two innings of work. Hodge struck out a pair and did not walk a batter.
Tanelda McDonald's single down the right-field line in the bottom of the first inning gave the Bulldogs an early 2-0 lead. Callye Williams added an RBI single with two outs in the frame to make it 3-0 but was tagged out between second and third when she tried to stretch it into a double for the third out.
Lindsay Hunley blooped a single to centerfield to drive in a run and make it 4-0 in the top of the second and then Courtney Bures drilled a three-run home run to straightaway center field to extend the MSU lead to 7-0. Reliever Amanda Antonovich allowed a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to make it 8-0. Antonovich was touched for four runs, three earned, and five hits in her two innings. She walked two and struck out a batter.
Catcher Nicole Whitlock ripped an RBI double to the gap in left center to make it an 8-1 game with two away in the top of the fourth inning. The Bulldogs, though, got three runs back in the home half of the fourth as Jennifer Jessup lined a three-run home run over the wall in left field to make the score 11-1.
The Blazers will next face Georgia Tech on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga., in a non-conference doubleheader.
