BIRMINGHAM, Ala.-- Birmingham-Southern handed UAB its most lopsided defeat of the season and ended the Blazers' 14-game home winning streak with a 12-0 victory on Tuesday evening at Young Memorial Field. The Panthers avenged their March 23 loss to UAB and became the first team to shut out the Blazers this season. UAB falls to 22-11 while Birmingham-Southern improves to 21-12.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead on just two hits in the top of the first. Heath Tapscott walked four batters and allowed RBI singles to Adam Tucker and Pat Mizerany which put the Panthers on top.
Birmingham-Southern added to its lead in the top of the sixth inning. After walks to Billy Froehlich and Mizerany and a bunt single by Casey Bond loaded the bases, Scott Billak laced a triple down the right field line, scoring all three runners and giving the Panthers a 7-0 advantage. A three-run home run by Tucker and solo shot by Mac Godwin off UAB reliever later in the inning put Birmingham-Southern up by 11 runs.
The Blazers return to action this weekend when they travel to Tampa, Fla. for a three-game series against Conference USA rival USF. Friday's game one will begin at 7 p.m. ET.
