BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Cole Helms and J.R. Bond each homered and drove in three runs as UAB handed Butler a 12-7 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Young Memorial Field. With the win, the Blazers are now 12-5 and extend their season-high winning streak to six games while the Bulldogs fall to 2-8 overall.
Six of UAB's nine starters recorded multiple-hit games while Dan Stucky and Zac Ward along with Helms and Bond all drove in three runs. The Blazers have now scored 48 runs in their last four games.
Senior Jeff Brown earned the victory for UAB, improving to 3-1 on the season.
The Blazers jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Clint Toomey led off with a double into the right-center field gap and scored when Stucky followed with an RBI double of his own. After a Helms infield single, Nathan McCorkle walked to load the bases with no outs. Ward then came through with a bases-clearing double to left-center field, giving UAB a 4-0 lead. Ward would come around to score when J.R. Bond ripped a single into left field.
Helms added to UAB's lead with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second inning. Toomey was on base after slapping a single into left field and scored on Helms' fourth round-tripper of the year.
The Bulldogs got on the board with four runs in the top of the third. Jonathan Day, Alex Rinearson and Matt Martino each contributed RBI singles to bring Butler back within three runs of UAB's lead.
With an 8-5 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, Bond launched his first home run of the season over the left field wall to put the Blazers up by five. A two-run double by Stucky with one out later in the inning scored Ryan Metcalf and Toomey and gave UAB even more breathing room.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Jacksonville State for a 6:30 p.m. game against the Gamecocks.
