TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Sophomore Garrett Osborn fired a one-under par 71 in Sunday's third round and UAB held on to third place in the Conrad Rehling Invite at Ol' Colony Golf Club. The Blazers, who notched their highest team finish of the year, jumped over No. 7 Michigan State to finish behind host Alabama and Georgia State in the team standings.
Osborn's 71 for the day gave the Birmingham native a four-over-par finish for the 54-hole tournament. He tied for third place on the overall leaderboard with three other golfers. The third place finish matches his career-best placement, which he earned at the 2003 Mason Rudolph Collegiate.
"Garrett played some good golf today," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "He has been putting together good rounds lately, but he put together three solid ones in succession this weekend. I was proud of him and of our team. Finishing third against that field was no easy task. Hopefully, this will give us the momentum we need heading toward the last half of our season."
Steve Tiley and Ty Harris of Georgia State took first and second place, respectively, in the individual competition. Thomas Hagler and Joseph Sykora of Alabama and Julian Colmenares of Jacksonville State all tied for third with Osborn.
The rest of UAB's contingent included senior Chris Cousins, who finished with a one-over par 73 in Sunday's third round to wind up 10-over for the tournament and tied for 15th place. Ryan Thomas was one stroke back overall after a 78 on Sunday and 227 for the tournament. Freshman Kaylor Timmons also shot 78 Sunday and wound up 14-over and tied for 29th out of 69 total individuals. Junior Clark Brown shot a four-over 77 Sunday for a 16-over tournament finish and tie for 38th overall.
The Blazers finished just 19 team strokes behind No. 29 Alabama, which won its own tournament for the second straight year and fourth time overall. UAB was just 16 shots behind the No. 18 Panthers of Georgia State, but finished eight shots ahead of No. 7 Michigan State. They also toppled Conference USA rivals Tulane and Memphis, which finished fifth and sixth, respectively, along with Ole Miss, Michigan and Mississippi State.
UAB gets no rest as it will next travel across the country to compete in the Oregon Duck Invitational in Eugene, Ore., Monday and Tuesday, March 21-22.
