TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Garrett Osborn's three-over-par 75 leads UAB's contingent at the Conrad Rehling Alabama Invite Friday at Ol' Colony Golf Club. UAB's team score of 307 has the Blazers in fourth place and just eight shots off of Michigan State's lead.
UAB is just three strokes behind host Alabama on the team leaderboard. Michigan State leads the way with a first-round 299 while Georgia State's 302 stands second. The Blazers are ahead of No. 30 Ole Miss (308), College of Charleston (309) and C-USA rival Memphis (310), as well as Michigan, Mississippi State, South Alabama, Tulane and Jacksonville State.
"We played fairly well, but still not at the level we're capable of," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "It's good to be up there battling with the leaders, though. Garrett (Osborn) has been shooting well lately. Hopefully both he and the others can go out there and get a little better Saturday and Sunday."
Georgia State's Steve Tiley was the lone individual under par on Friday after a two-under 70 on the par-72, 7,079-yard course. Michigan State's Matt Harmon, Charleston's Rand Williams and Jacksonville State's Julian Colmenares each fired even par 72 to stand tied for second after the first round.
Osborne, a sophomore from Birmingham, is tied with five other golfers for 12th place overall. Senior Ryan Thomas and freshman Kaylor Timmons shot identical rounds of 77 and are tied for 21st on the individual leaderboard. Senior Chris Cousins (78, T-31st) and junior Clark Brown (82, T-54th) also competed for the Blazers.
The second of three rounds in the invitational gets underway with a 9 a.m. CT shotgun start on Saturday. The third round will play Sunday with a similar 9 a.m. shotgun start.
