BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and starting pitcher Jeff Brown threw seven shutout innings as the Blazers defeated Tennessee Tech, 11-0, on Friday evening at Young Memorial Field. UAB is now 9-5 on the season while the Golden Eagles fall to 3-9.
Brown improved his record to 2-1 after scattering just five hits in seven innings and striking out six. Tennessee Tech starter Blake Forst suffered the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year after allowing six earned runs in 3.2 innings.
All nine UAB starters recorded at least one hit in the game, as Nathan McCorkle led the way with a 3-for-5 night at the plate, including his third home run of the season. UAB relievers Grant Addison, Lyle Northington and Allen West held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to finish off the shutout.
The game remained deadlocked at zero until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Blazers sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs on seven hits. McCorkle started the scoring with a two-run home run to right field, his third of the year. Clint Toomey and Dan Stucky each recorded bases loaded walks in the inning, and McCorkle finished the scoring with a two-run single which plated Seth Rollin and Cole Helms. The 10-run explosion was a season-high for UAB.
The Blazers added a run to their lead in the bottom of the eighth. Pinch hitter Levi Patmon drew a walk, moved to third on a double by J.R. Bond and scored on a Rollin sacrifice fly.
Game two between UAB and Tennessee Tech is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday at Young Memorial Field.
