Women's Tennis Defeats Arkansas State In First Match Of Season

JONESBORO, Ark. --- The UAB women's tennis team won five singles matches to record a 5-2 victory over Arkansas State in its first match of the 2005 season. After dropping the doubles point, the Blazers fought back to win the No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles matches.
"I'm really happy about this win," said UAB head coach Mert Ertunga. "It starts the season off right. I am also happy to see that we won all the close sets and matches. This was the first collegiate test for many of the girls and everyone played well."
Two of UAB's (1-0) wins came in three sets, as both Blazers won the third set for the victory. In the No. 2 singles match, UAB's Gulsah Esen beat the Lady Indians' Maria Oprea, 6-2, 6-7, 6-4. At the No. 5 position, Blazer Antonia Nugent was a 7-5, 2-6, 6-1 winner over ASU's Ashlesha Lokhande.
UAB's Ornischa Maier-Knapp took the No. 3 match over Lady Indian Marusa Pogacnik, 6-3, 6-1. In the No. 4 tilt, Samrin Tanzeem of UAB defeated Ienee Branker, 6-2, 6-3. The Blazers' Annemieke Elsholz was a 6-1, 7-5 winner over Arkansas State's Karen Saravia.
Arkansas State (0-1) took the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. UAB's Julia von Samson and Nugent fell to Marina Engelbrecht and Pogacnik, 6-1, 6-4, in the No. 1 match. At the No. 3 position, ASU's Oprea and Melissa Silva defeated Blazers Elzholz and Jana Wild, 9-7.
The Blazers lone doubles victory came in the No. 2 tilt, as Esen and Maier-Knapp beat Branke and Lokhande, 8-5.
In exhibition play, Seden Soyalp and Tanzeem paired up for a victory in doubles, while Soyalp and Wild both won in singles.
