Osborn, UAB Take First-Round Lead At WCU

CASHIERS, N.C. - Junior Garrett Osborn missed the Trillian Golf Links course record by one stroke, firing a first-round, six-under par 65 and UAB shot three-under as a team to take the early lead at the Western Carolina Intercollegiate Monday afternoon. Freshman Josh Thompson took the highlight of the day, however, after notching a hole-in-one on the par 3, 212-yard 15th hole.
"We played well and jumped out to a good lead to start off," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Garrett played the way we expect him to play and we've known all along Josh had some great golf in him. Holes-in-one don't come around very often, so we're happy for him."
UAB's first-round 281 is five shots in front of second place Radford. Charleston Southern (289), Belmont Abbey (292) and Elon (295) round out the top five in the 11-team event on the par 71, 6,404-yard course.
Osborn's 65 is three strokes in front of Radford's Chris Dillow. UAB's Zack Sucher's one-under 70 is tied with Shawn Hall of Charleston Southern and Ryan Wilson of High Point for third place. Kaylor Timmons shot a one-over 72 and is tied for ninth. Thompson shot a three-over par 74 and is tied with nine others for 21st. Senior Clark Brown had an opening round 78 for the Blazers as well.
"As we get toward the middle of the season, we normally see our freshmen start to come on," Kaufman said. "Josh and Zack did a good job today. We hope they can use that confidence to develop some consistency in their scores which will help us tremendously. Kaylor turned in another solid performance for us, so we're in good shape heading to Tuesday."
The 36-hole tournament will conclude with the final 18 holes Tuesday. It is the final fall outing for the Blazers who next play Feb. 5-7 in the Mercedes Benz Intercollegiate hosted by North Florida in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
