BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB men's golf team continued it's assault on the top-25 last week with its 11th upset of a ranked foe in three tournaments. The Blazers now set their sights on the Western Carolina Intercollegiate Field in a 54-hole, two day affair at Trillian Golf Links in Cashiers, N.C. Garrett Osborn, the No. 2 rated golfer in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings, headlines UAB's contingent, but is coming off a Tunica National Intercollegiate tournament in which he withdrew from one round due to a wrist injury.
"As the Tunica National tournament showed us, we not only need more than Garrett to be successful, but fortunately, we have more than Garrett," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Kaylor (Timmons) and Clark (Brown) stepped up big for us and we were able to finish well when Garrett went down. That only gives our whole team more confidence heading into this tournament."
Kaylor Timmons and Clark Brown tied for sixth at Tunica National and UAB captured its third straight third place finish against difficult fields. Osborn, who shot 77-73 in the final two rounds at Tunica, is day-to-day with the wrist injury, but expected to play at the WCU tournament. Freshmen Zack Sucher and Josh Thompson will again round out the five-man roster for UAB.
The Blazers face a field that, for the first time this season, does not include a ranked foe. Host Western Carolina is joined by Charleston Southern, Radford, Gardner-Webb, Lipscomb, High Point, Dayton, Belmont Abbey, Elon and Wofford in the WCU Intercollegiate.
