UAB Wraps Up Home Schedule With Tulane and UTEP

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB volleyball team puts the finishing touches on the home portion of its 2005 schedule with a pair of matches this weekend against Conference USA rivals Tulane and UTEP. The Blazers (14-8, 5-6 C-USA) host the Green Wave (2-12, 1-10 C-USA) Friday evening at 7 p.m. at Bartow Arena before welcoming the Miners (16-9, 6-6 C-USA) Sunday at 1 p.m. in the home finale.
The Blazers have dropped four of their last five, including a 3-1 loss to Georgia State Tuesday at Bartow Arena. UAB currently sits in a two-way tie for seventh place in the C-USA standings and is led by freshman Ivana Bozic who averages a team-best 4.49 kills-per-game. Freshman setter Nevena Stefanov has also been outstanding in her first season as a Blazer, averaging 12.33 assist-per-game, including her 1,000th of the season on Tuesday against the Lady Panthers.
Tulane has lost five in a row and 12 of its last 13, including a 3-0 loss to UTEP on Wednesday evening. The Green Wave is getting 5.11 kills-per-game from Sara Radosevic and a team-high 5.68 digs-per-contest from Kelli Dickson. Tulane has won 13 of 18 meetings all-time against the Blazers.
After handling the Green Wave easily in College Station, Texas on Wednesday, UTEP is now percentage points ahead of UAB in the conference standings. Kari Stacey leads the Miners offensively, averaging a team-best 4.47 kills-per-game. Brittany Stowers' 4.78 digs-per-contest is also tops on the team. Sunday's match will mark the first ever between UAB and UTEP.
After this weekend, the Blazers have two remaining conference road matches at Marshall and East Carolina next weekend before taking part in the Conference USA Tournament Nov. 17-20 in Houston.
