BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB women's basketball team travels to Chattanooga, Tenn., to face the Lady Mocs Wednesday at 7 p.m. The game is the second of three games for the Blazers this week as UAB defeated Jackson State Monday night and travels to Ole Miss Saturday afternoon.
UAB is looking to even the series, as Chattanooga currently has a 15-14 lead. The Lady Mocs have won the last three contests between the two schools, including an 80-70 win last season in Bartow Arena. UAB and the Lady Mocs faced each other every season from 1980-1993, renewing the series in 2002.
"We know going into Chattanooga is a definite challenge," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "They are a very good team and are very well coached. They have a balanced attack with Katasha Brown and Brooke Hand shooting the three and Tiffani Roberson in the post. We feel we have to go into the game with a lot of energy and enthusiasm. We're going to have to run as much as we can in transition. This is a seasoned team and we have to be ready for them."
The Blazers (1-2) got their first win of the season Monday night as they defeated Jackson State, 73-62. After trailing by as much as eight in the first half, UAB came back and went on a 15-6 run to end the first half and take the lead for good. Crystal McFadden led UAB with 21 points, a new season high for the junior. Sophomore LaKitha Murray had 12 points on 6-of-7 shooting to go along with a team-best four assists. Domaneice Moore had 10 rebounds in the contest, giving her double-digits in rebounds in both of her appearances this season.
The Lady Mocs improved to 2-3 on the season with a 78-69 win over Stephen F. Austin in the consolation round of the Lady Rebel Shootout in Las Vegas, Nev. Brooke Hand came off the bench to lead Chattanooga with 22 points in 23 minutes of action. Tiffani Roberson and Katasha Brown lead the Lady Mocs with 13.0 points a game each, while Alex Anderson is pulling down 7.4 rebounds per contest. Head coach Wes Moore is in his seventh season at the helm of the Chattanooga women's basketball team.
