BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB Football team practiced for just over two hours Wednesday afternoon in preparation for the season finale this Saturday at East Carolina. The Blazers match up against the Pirates for only the fifth time in school history. Kickoff for the game is set for this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. CT from Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
"The intensity of our practices has been good," said UAB head coach Watson Brown. "We have practiced hard all year and we are coming into the last game with a lot to play for. The motivation is there and we've had good practices. We have played inconsistent at times but have played much better over the last few weeks. Hopefully we will care that into East Carolina."
UAB (5-5, 3-4) will have an opportunity to become bowl-eligible Saturday against the Pirates. The Blazers have won two of their last three games including last weeks upset over previously ranked UTEP in El Paso. Senior Darrell Hackney leads the Blazers with 22 touchdowns this year. The Blazers will look to juniors Corey White, Dan Burks and Marculus Elliott to handle the running duties. White led the way last week against the Miners with 106 yards, while Elliott added 71 on the ground.
The Pirates have produced big yardage on the ground over the last three weeks. East Carolina racked up 272 ground yards against UCF and recorded 120-yards against Tulsa. Last week against Marshall, ECU had 245 rushing yards on the road. Sophomore running back Chris Johnson led the way with 18 carries for 106 yards and three touchdowns.
The UAB-East Carolina game will be carried live on the ISP Blazer Sports Network on flagship station, WYDE-FM 101.1. The game will also be televised on UPN channel 68 in Birmingham. The Blazers will return to practice Thursday morning before the team will gather for a Thanksgiving dinner around 11:00 a.m. CT
