BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team advanced to the Conference USA Tournament, after finishing 8-9-1 in the regular season and 4-4-1 in the conference. The Blazers enter the tournament as the sixth seed and will face Rice in the opening round. UAB and the Owls will play on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium at 7:30 p.m. CT.
"We are extremely excited to be playing in the conference tournament," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "Rice is a team we haven't faced before and it's always exciting to play a new opponent. Tonight will be a great atmosphere since we are facing the home team at their place. The tournament is what it's all about. We've made it to post-season and it's a great accomplishment just to be here. I hope the players will enjoy their experiences and know that this is a great opportunity."
The winner of tonight's match will advance to the second round and face the winner between SMU and East Carolina. Complete tournament action can be found at the Conference USA tournament central web page.
UAB recently had four women's soccer players honored by Conference USA, the league office. Nasra Abdullah was named Freshman of the Year and a first-team All-Conference USA pick. Sophomore Jill Porto was named first-team all-conference and Pam Cooney and Sally Palmer nabbed second-team all-conference honors as well.
