BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- After taking a 31-28 lead into the locker room at half, the UAB women's basketball team went cold in the second half and was defeated by Georgia Tech, 68-55, in the season opener for both teams.
The Yellow Jackets (1-0) started the second half with a 20-3 run over the first six minutes and took a commanding 48-34 lead. The Blazers (0-1) were hampered by poor shooting in the final 20 minutes of action, hitting only 8-of-35 of their shots, 22.9 percent.
"I'm proud of the way our women's came out in the first half and attacked," said UAB head coach Audra Smith. "We had the lead at the break and really had a lot of confidence. In the second half we went up by five then Georgia Tech did a great job. They went on a run and kept punching at us. Before we knew it their lead ballooned. We had a lot of good looks at the basket but we couldn't drop them down. We have to find a way to regroup and find a way to beat a real good Louisiana-Monroe team next Tuesday."
Junior guard Carmen Guzman led the Blazers with 12 points and five assists in the contest. Junior forward Domaneice Moore recorded a double-double for UAB, tallying 10 points and a career-high 18 rebounds.
Nine players tallied points for the Blazers, a marked improvement from last season when UAB was plagued by a short bench for virtually the entire year. The Blazers had not had more than eight players record points since an 85-68 win over Saint Louis on January 23, 2005.
Georgia Tech had three players tally double digits with Chioma Nnamaka's 22 leading the way. Stephanie Higgs recorded 12 points and a team-high four assists, while Janie Mitchell had 11 points and nine rebounds.
UAB heads to Monroe, La., to face Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m.
