BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team will plays its final regular season home game of the 2005 season Saturday afternoon as the Blazers play host to Conference USA East Division leader UCF.
Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Legion Field and the contest will be the final home appearance for 17 UAB seniors, including record-setting quarterback Darrell Hackney. Hackney will conclude his Blazer career as one of the most prolific signal-callers in C-USA history. He enters Saturday's game with UCF as the conference leader in passing yards per game, pass efficiency and total offense per game.
He ranks No. 5 all-time in Conference USA in passing yards with 9,184 and needs just 22 against the Golden Knights Saturday to move into the No. 4 position. Former Tulane quarterback Patrick Ramsey threw for 9,205 yards during his career from 1998-2001.
UAB (4-4, 2-3) is coming off an impressive 37-20 victory at Memphis 11 days ago, a win that was critical to keeping the Blazers' bowl hopes alive. The Blazers will conclude their 2005 regular season with back-to-back road games, starting next week at C-USA West Division leader UTEP and then the following week (Nov. 26) at league foe East Carolina.
The Golden Knights (6-3, 5-1) have been the surprise team in the conference this year and one of the best "turnaround" stories in college football. Last season, UCF struggled to an 0-11 record but have totally turned that around under second-year head coach George O'Leary who has UCF already bowl eligible and battling for a conference championship.
Quarterback Steven Moffett leads the Golden Knight offense, hitting 61 percent of his passes for 2,046 yards. His favorite targets are Mike Walker (57 receptions, 740 yards) and Brandon Marshall (48 catches, 769 yards).
