HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The UAB volleyball team dropped its fourth-consecutive match on Friday evening, a 3-0 loss to Conference USA regular-season champion Marshall in the Cam Henderson Center. With one regular season match remaining, the Blazers fall to 14-11 and 5-9 in league play while the Thundering Herd improves its stellar mark to 22-5 overall, 14-1 in C-USA.
"I thought we did a good job of showing some fight and getting ourselves back into the match in the first and second games," said UAB co-interim head coach Nikola Petrovic. "Hopefully we can use what we learned to finish out the regular season on a good note Sunday at East Carolina."
Freshman Ivana Bozic led the Blazers with a 10-kill, 10-dig double-double performance. Fellow freshman Aleksandra Vujovic led UAB with 13 kills. Preseason C-USA Player of the Year selection Kelly Anne-Billingy led all players with 14 kills and a .371 attack percentage for the Herd. Marshall has lost just once in its last 16 matches, and is a perfect 8-0 at home this season.
Marshall opened game one by winning nine of the first ten points and never looked back. The Blazers clawed back to within four points of the Herd lead at 21-17, but would get no further, falling by a score of 30-22.
Despite being tied at 15, UAB again could not overcome Marshall's attack, dropping game two 30-25 before the Herd finished off the match with a dominant, 30-18 showing in the third and final contest.
The Blazers now have one Conference USA match remaining on Sunday at East Carolina at 1 p.m. ET before traveling to Houston for the 2005 C-USA Volleyball Tournament hosted by Rice from Nov. 17-20.
