TUNICA, Miss. - Kaylor Timmons shot a two-over par 74 to catch teammate Clark Brown and tie for sixth place overall to help lead UAB's men's golf team to a third place finish out of 15 teams at the Ole Miss-hosted Tunica National Collegiate Tuesday afternoon. Brown and Timmons finished with 10-over par, 226s on a wind-blown course at the par-72, 7,204-yard Tunica National Golf Course.
Belmont made a third round charge to jump past UAB on the team leaderboard. The Bruins recorded a third-round 291 - the low team score of the day - to finish second behind wire-to-wire leader SMU. UAB finished just two shots out of second and six strokes from the Mustangs, who fired rounds of 300-302-303 for the team win. UAB recorded a 305 on Tuesday after rounds of 302 and 304 Monday.
"We had some respectable scores considering the wind and weather," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "Our freshmen had some high scores which didn't help us, but the experience of playing in those conditions will help them and us in the long run. It was good to see Garrett (Osborn) back out there and playing well. We'll just try to learn from the experience and get better, as usual."
Osborn, the third-ranked individual in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin computer ratings, withdrew from Monday's first round after re-aggravating a left wrist injury suffered three weeks ago in practice. He returned for a 77 in Monday's second round. Osborn shot a one-over par 73 today.
Timmons followed a pair of 76s on Monday with a 74 Tuesday for his first top-10 finish of the year. Brown held on to his tie for sixth with rounds of 73-76-77. Freshmen Zack Sucher and Josh Thompson shot 82 and 81, respectively on Tuesday.
The third place finish gives UAB three straight top three finishes in team events. The Blazers' head-to-head record thus far in the fall is 33-17. UAB upset its 11th ranked foe of the season with the placement as No. 24 Kent State finished in fourth place, just six shots behind the Blazers. UNC Greensboro, Mississippi State, Colorado, Tulane, Lamar and Ole Miss rounded out the top 10. Colorado's Edward McGlasson shot 72-72-76 to win the individual honors at the tournament with a four-over par, 220.
Kaufman's Blazers close out fall play next Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 7 and 8, at the Western Carolina Invitational. The two-day, 54-hole tournament will be played at the Trillian Golf Links in Cashiers, N.C.
