BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team advanced to the Conference USA Tournament, after finishing 8-9-1 in the regular season and 4-4-1 in the conference. The Blazers enter the tournament as the sixth seed and will face Rice in the opening round. UAB and the Owls will play on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium at 7:30 p.m. CT.
UCF and SMU both secured a share of the 2005 C-USA regular season women's soccer championship Sunday by picking up 2-1 victories over Houston and Memphis, respectively. Both squads finished the conference schedule with identical 8-1 records and 16 points. UCF earns the top seed in the tournament by winning a tiebreaker between the schools. SMU will be the No. 2 seed, while the Rice will be third in the eight-team draw.
The remaining seeds are as follows: UTEP is No. 4, Memphis is No. 5, UAB is No. 6, East Carolina is No. 7 and Houston is No. 8. Top-seeded UCF will face No. 8 Houston in the tournament's opening game at Noon (CT) on Wednesday. No. 4 UTEP will face No. 5 Memphis at 2:30 p.m. to conclude the afternoon match-ups. The evening games on Wednesday feature No. 2 SMU vs. No. 7 East Carolina at 5 p.m., to be followed by UAB's match against Rice.
Semifinals are set for Friday, Nov. 4 at the Rice/Track Soccer Stadium with game five set for a 5 p.m. (CT) kickoff and game six scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The championship game is slated for a 1 p.m. start on Sunday, Nov. 6, and is to be aired live on CSTV.
