UAB Women's Soccer Set To Host Final Homestand

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team will host Southern Miss Friday at 4 p.m. CT and UCF Sunday at noon in the final homestand of the regular-season. UAB leads the overall series over Southern Miss and will play UCF for the second time in school history. Sunday will also be UAB Senior Day to honor seniors Laura Skridulis and Becky Garcia.
UAB is led offensively by sophomore Sally Palmer who leads Conference USA with eight goals. She is averaging 1.60 goals per game. Palmer has more points than any other player in C-USA with 17. UAB ranks first in C-USA in team goals with 14. The Blazers are averaging 2.80 goals per game.
Defensively for the Blazers, junior goalkeeper Katie Forbis currently ranks first in Conference USA in saves with 96. She is averaging 7.38 saves per game and has 10 more than Amber Campbell from East Carolina. In 13 games this season Forbis has a .835 saves percentage.
Southern Miss enters the weekend with a 4-6-1 overall record and is 1-4 in Conference USA. Last weekend, USM lost in double-overtime to East Carolina, 2-1, Sunday, but beat Marshall, 3-0, Friday night. The Golden Eagles have lost six of their last seven games. They are led by senior Micah Stephens and freshman Sarah McFadden. Stephens has five goals in 11 games and has recorded 11 points. McFadden leads the Eagles with 14 points and five goals. Freshman goalkeeper Holly Cox has played in 10 games this year allowing 16 goals and posting 37 saves.
Sunday will be the second all-time meeting between UAB and UCF. The Golden Knights are one of five 2004 NCAA Tournament teams that the Blazers have faced. UCF is 7-9 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA. UCF has won three of its last four matches including two last weekend. The Golden Knights defeated Marshall Sunday, 3-0 and East Carolina Friday night, 3-1. UCF lost to the Miami Hurricanes Tuesday evening, 2-1, and will travel to Memphis Friday.
UAB will complete the 2005 regular-season at SMU next Friday and Tulsa Sunday in the final match. The Blazers will then head directly to Houston for the C-USA Tournament. The conference Tournament is set for Nov. 2-5 and will be held at the Rice Soccer Complex.
