MEMPHIS, Tenn. --- The UAB women's soccer team fell to Memphis, 1-0, Friday night at the Mike Rose Soccer Complex in Memphis. UAB falls to 7-6-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Conference USA. Memphis improves to 9-4-0 and 3-1-0 in the conference.
"I was very pleased with the way we played three-quarters of the game," said UAB head coach Paul Harbin. "We did a lot of things tonight that you have to do to win but we weren't as focused as we needed to be on finishing out chances. We had a number of opportunities in the first half. We hit a cross bar in the second half but we need to find a way to finish off plays. I didn't feel like Memphis had a lot of dangerous chances tonight but they got one really good scoring chance and they put it away."
In the first half of action, UAB and Memphis both had 12 shots with the Blazers having seven shots on goal. Despite relentless pressure by both teams the match remained scoreless at the break.
UAB would have multiple opportunities in the second half but Memphis broke the scoreless tie in the 82nd minute, when Melissa Savage scored on an assist from Shoko Mikami and Asuka Kubota. UAB continued to battle but could not overcome the late goal.
Offensively, UAB had 16 shots in the game with nine shots on goal. Junior goalkeeper Katie Forbis had seven saves in the match while playing 90 minutes. .
UAB will take Sunday off before hosting its final homestand of the year against Southern Miss and UCF. The Blazers face Southern Miss next Friday at 4 p.m. and UCF at noon Sunday. Both matches will be played at West Campus Field.
