UAB Women's Soccer Takes on Tigers in Memphis

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB women's soccer team continues Conference USA action at Memphis Friday night. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. CT and will be played at the Rose Soccer Complex. The Blazers enter the weekend in first place in the C-USA standings, while Memphis is fourth.
Friday night's meeting will be the 11th all-time between the two schools. UAB holds an 8-2 series advantage. The Blazers have won six of the last seven meeting including two of three in Memphis. This season, UAB is 7-5-1 overall and 3-0-1 in C-USA. Heading into Friday's match, the Blazers have won four of their last five matches.
UAB is led offensively by sophomores Sally Palmer and Jill Porto. Palmer leads the Blazers in goals with nine and points with 21. Palmer had her first career hat trick against UTEP in the C-USA opener in Birmingham. Porto has seven goals in the last five matches, including two hat tricks. Porto has eight total goals this season.
Defensively, UAB junior goalkeeper Katie Forbis currently ranks first in Conference USA in saves with 89. She is averaging 7.42 saves per game and has 18 more than Amber Campbell from East Carolina. In 12 games this season Forbis has a .832 saves percentage.
With five matches left in the 2005 season, Katie Forbis needs three to tie her total from last year and 15 to break the all-time single-season record for saves with 104. She currently ranks third on the all-time career saves list with 239 and needs 19 more to pass Jen Braly for second place. Lisa Nowoslawski ranks first with 327 career saves from 1999-2002.
Memphis is 8-4-0 this year and 2-1-0 in the conference. They have won two of their last three matches and are 5-2 this season at home. The Tigers are led by scoring threats Shoko Mikami and Kylie Hayes. Mikami is a junior and leads the team with 13 goals and 29 points. Hayes, a freshman, has 10 goals in 12 games and five assists this year.
Following Friday's match at Memphis, the Blazers have four regular-season matches left. UAB will return home next weekend to face Southern Miss at 4 p.m. Friday and UCF Sunday at noon.
