TUSCALOOSA, Ala. ----- The UAB men's team claimed its second consecutive shutout victory Saturday, downing No. 68 Central Florida, 4-0, in a match played at the University of Alabama's Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
The Blazers (2-0) and Golden Knights had been scheduled to play in Birmingham at the Brook Highland Racquet Club, but inclement weather in Alabama Friday and Saturday forced the match indoors.
The sudden change of venue didn't seem to bother the Blazers, as for the second straight match this season; UAB did not yield a set.
"We practiced indoors yesterday (Friday) in Birmingham, and then we came down here early Saturday to hit on the courts," said UAB head coach Derek Tarr, "so I think that helped us make the adjustment."
UAB jumped on UCF early by winning three doubles matches in convincing fashion to secure the doubles point. Andre Maier and Filip Kanczula defeated the Golden Knights' Simon Jaeger and Joel Allen, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, the Blazers' duo of Sebastian Falk and Thomas Werkmann won over the UCF tandem of Paul Ramy and Rhett Rosen, 8-1. The No. 3 match resulted in the same 8-1 margin for UAB's Kristijan Mitrovski and Anton Mavrin over Central Florida's Sebastian Delgado and Sinan Sudas.
"We really jumped on them in doubles and set the tone for the match," said Tarr. "Our intensity was outstanding today and we were able to stay on top of them all day. This was a good win for us against a quality team, a ranked team."
Falk continued UAB's momentum in singles play as he won at No. 1 over UCF's Ener Gursoy, 6-1. 1-0, ret. At No. 2 singles Mavrin downed UCF's Allen, 6-1, 3-0, ret. and at No. 3, UAB's Werkmann was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Jaeger to clinch the match for the Blazers.
UAB's Maier was leading his No. 4 singles match and Mitrovski was up at No. 5 singles while Kanczula and UCF's Sudas were knotted at 2-2.
The Blazers will be back in action on Wednesday, Feb. 2 when they play at No. 30 Mississippi State (2:00 p.m. CT).
